Index Card a Day – Week 6

2016-07-09 12.22.51-1

Arrows turned into feathers! I have been seeing a couple feathers recently too so, I looked up the symbolic meaning.  Feathers deal with ascension and spiritual evolution to a higher plane. Feathers were worn by Native American Chiefs to symbolize their communication with Spirit, and to express their celestial wisdom. I have specifically been seeing gray and white feathers which symbolize hope.

Index Card a Day – Week 5

2016-07-09 12.14.03

I started this week with a few more desert botanical paintings, but then I switched to arrows. I’m currently working on a freelance design project using arrows which has lead me to drawing and painting lots of arrows! It’s been interesting to how my focus shifts and what pops up on a daily project like this.

Index Card a Day – Week 4

Icad2016-Week4

The first half of the week I got a little fancier with my golden patterns and I totally dig that vibe. Then I switched courses due to some takeout food. Alisa Burke shared that she creates stamps from Styrofoam and a wood burning tool so, I gave it a try.

I had fun creating some simple stamps. I’m not sure how many uses will print well yet but, it was nice to have a quick, easy way to make my own stamps.

Index Card a Day – Week 3

Icad2016-Week3

Patterns for days. I have really been having fun pairing metallic pastel shapes with different hues of watercolors to see how they work together. That aqua green in the bottom left makes me swoon. The green triangles are a close second and the middle tree formed pattern makes my heart sing. It’s been so much fun to play!

Index Card a Day – Week 2

2016-06-14 14.57.29

I love the sweet desert botanical watercolors I created the first week but, this week I totally switched it up half way through. I went to Hobby Lobby and came upon a set of metallic oil pastels on clearance, total score! I began playing with them and making patterns combining gold pastel with watercolor. I love the resist that happens with pastels and paint. My patterns are a bit messy but, it was so fun to play with new materials.

The beauty of daily practice is you never know how it will change and delight you.

Index Card a Day – Week 1

ICAD-week1

Thanks to my online friend Anika Starmer (aisforanika) who posted about Index-Card-a-Day on her instagram feed I joined the #icad2016 challenge. I’m a bit obsessed with Anika’s #100daysofbotanika project as well.

I was craving a daily creative challenge to help stretch me in ways unplanned. I jumped on board when I saw Anika’s post and then found myself hesitant to start on the first day. Do I need to spend my time on this? Is this a good use of my limited time each day to create, write and do all the things I already have to do? Should I create a theme, follow the prompts or just go with the flow each day? What materials should I use?

I almost said the heck with it. Then, I realized it’s an index card. That’s the beauty of it. It’s simple and humble and I do not need to make it a big deal. I just need to give myself a few minutes each day and that’s it. Just a few minutes and these little potted plants have grabbed a hold of my creative heart. They have helped me gain confidence with watercolors and are a challenge in simplicity. Plus, they are cute!

So, yes. I do need to spend my time on this.
