Abstract Mandalas I and II

One of my favorite things to paint is mandalas. The repetition of shapes and patterns is freeing and calming to create. You simply start with a center and add on one row at a time. As mandalas change and evolve they help you to see how one thing leads to the next. They are a good tool for trusting and working through your intuition. I fall into a blissful meditative state whenever I draw or paint one. Today I want to share with you two different but, similar styled abstract mandala paintings I have created. You’ll also find a link to watch a work in progress painting video. Super vulnerable moment as I’m not very confident on camera but, you have to start somewhere. xo

Believe in You Affirmation Artwork

I enjoy making art that speaks. In this case it is a positive affirmation and reminder to believe in yourself. An affirmation is a personal statement that can be used to boost self-esteem, reduce stress, and manifest the life of your dreams by retraining your subconscious mind. The playful colors and mandala design along with the affirmation in this artwork will infuse your space with positive vibes and gently remind you that you are worth believing in.

When Life Gives You Lemons

2016-01-10 17.16.59

You make lemonade and lemon bars and lemon spaghetti and … well, you get the idea. Every winter our little lemon tree gives us a beautiful bounty. Here are of my favorite ways and some new things I tried this season.

2015-11-08 09.43.49-1Warm Water with Lemon and Cayenne

I enjoy this drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The warm water and lemon helps flush and re-hydrate the body, improve digestion, offer a little immune boost with vitamin C and potassium and can lead to cleaner skin. Remember not to squeeze your lemon directly into boiling water, you will destroy the live enzymes in the lemon, instead use warm water. Combining cayenne with lemon increases the detoxing effect and raises the temperature of your body increasing your metabolism. To really boost your immune fighting ability add a splash of raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar. ACV is known to help to relieve allergies, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, aid digestion, control candida and more. A quick search online will reveal so many ways ACV this helps! I drink this concoction with a straw to minimize the amount that gets on my teeth and could erode enamel.

Recipe from Inga Garten

This recipe has you put the lemon juice, water, sugar and ice into a blender. I had never done that before with lemonade and it’s brilliant. It’s frothy, light and delicious.

Recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction

These have become my family’s favorite lemon dessert. The cream filling tastes like lemon cheesecake. I usually use the Better Crocker cookie mix shortcut which makes this such a simple and quick recipe but, I think I’ll try the from scratch recipe next time. Since we are all sensitive to dairy and I make these quite a bit around the holidays, I split the filling in half and made two batch last time and they tasted great.

DSCF1278Fresh Lemon Bars
Recipe from 365 Favorite Brand Name Cookie Recipes

Crust:

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened (although I usually add another 1/4 cup)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • grated peel of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 and 1/4 cup flour

Lemon Layer:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 and 2/3 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • grated peel of 1/2 lemon
  • juice of 2 lemons (6 tablespoons)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • confectioner’s sugar

To make crust, in a bowl blend butter, sugar and lemon peel. Gradually stir in flour to form a soft crumbly dough. Press evenly into the bottom of an aluminum foil lined 13x9x2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, to prepare lemon layer. In a large bowl whisk eggs well. Stir together sugar, flour and baking powder. Gradually whisk sugar mixture into eggs. Stir in lemon peel, lemon juice and vanilla. Pour over hot baked crust. Return to oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Cool. Using foil on two sides, lift out the cookie base. With a wet knife cut into bars or squares. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar.

2016-01-11 18.38.20Ways to Use Lemon Peels and Save Lemons for Later

  • Put down the garbage disposal to freshen it up
  • Place in a jar with vinegar and soak for two weeks, add vinegar to spray bottle for a natural cleaner
  • Freeze lemon juice in ice cubes
  • Freeze lemon zest
  • Freeze a whole lemon, zest the entire thing and put it on anything. Say what? Yep. I had read this a few times recently and the health benefits it touts is worth giving it a try.  Simply take an organic lemon, wash it and then put it in the freezer. Once it is frozen you get whatever is necessary to grate or shred the whole lemon without even peeling it first…. I’m always looking for new ways to enjoy this delicious citrus fruit. I would love to hear what your favorite lemon recipe or way to use lemons is!

Happy New Year!

NewYear

Happy New Year Friends!!! Thank you for an amazing 2015. I haven’t had a chance to process it all yet. I will be working in Leonie Dawson’s Shining Workbook this month and once I release my 2015 it will really come into focus what transpired. I know it was a big, transformative year. I know this because I have been in hibernation resting from it all. I have slept for 12 hrs on at least three different occasions within the last two weeks. I have taken the kids school “winter break” quite literally, ha! In addition to all the sleep, I have been binge watching movies with the family and reading so, even when I’m awake there has been a lot of down time relaxing. It has been healing.

Of course, I felt the “should’s” creep up. I should be getting things done; do my workbooks, clean the garage, take the kids to see snow, work on a new jewelry idea, get my artwork updated online, get outside and the list goes on. All those “should’s” are compelling and worth making time for but, I had to shoo those thoughts away and remind myself that rest was work too. A different kind of work … soul work. There is no shame in giving in to your need for rest and recuperation. When the need within being is strong, it’s important to listen. The creative muse often shows up demanding attention, energy and time in anyway possible followed by a quiet stillness. It’s okay to enjoy both, the yin and the yang.

Fittingly, I was treated to an online yin yoga session this week. It was an offering in the Woman Unleashed online retreat. And today, I had the pleasure of exploring painting with intuition (my fav) with Alena Hennessy. We created “I am …” artwork.

2016-01-01 20.07.04

I am devoted. I love that. I have never had that word show up for me before. After I was done, I thought about my devotion and how it applies to my life. I am devoted … to my creative life, my art, my loves and my tribe (that includes you!) Wishing you a new year filled with love and devotion. xoxo

Happy Solstice

12239574_10156256212270015_6218375634423435396_n

If you are in the northern hemisphere, Monday was the shortest day of the year. The Winter Solstice is the moment on Earth when darkness reaches its peak, just before the return of the light. We are reminded that the old must end in order to begin anew. It is a time of stillness, reflection, re-birth and transformation.

I celebrated by beginning the Woman Unleashed online retreat, a free event, with Amber Kuileimailani Bonnici to help me awaken my power, passion and purpose for 2016. Visit www.womanunleashedretreat.com to learn more.

One of my desires this coming year is to truly pause and celebrate the changing of seasons. Being a desert dweller our season changes are subtle and the days flow into months without realizing how much time as passed. I’d like to fully honor the season changes with a small ritual.

Here are a few ways to celebrate the Winter Solstice:

  • Spend time with loved ones with a feast representing the season.
  • Light a candle. Reflect on your aspirations for the coming months.
  • Visit a place outdoors that’s special to you. Consider watching the sun rise or set from your little patch of the world.
  • Hold a fire ceremony. Write what you’d like to release and throw the paper into the fire as a symbol of letting go.
  • Reflect the stillness of the day by cultivating stillness in yourself. Consider a meditation or hour of silence.
  • Build a shrine (or mandala) of nature’s found objects.
  • Give to others by donating food or clothing to those less fortunate.

As you light the fire and candles for your celebration, do so with the intention of bringing more light into the world.

How about you? How do you celebrate the changing of the seasons?

Morning Pages

MorningPagesMonthly yoga art desktop calendar from Eliza Lynn Tobin.

This July, I started a practice of “morning pages” or in my case, “afternoon pages” and “evening pages” too since doing anything at a specific time or even on a daily basis seems to be a mental block for me. My inner rebel against conformity, maybe? Anyhoo, the idea is to journal 3 pages long hand in the morning everyday. Letting whatever needs to flow onto the pages. House cleaning for your mind and soul. This concept was created by author and creativity guru Julia Cameron in her wildly popular book “The Artists Way”. True to my nature, I have not been consistent with doing this everyday but, I am trying to keep up with it even if I have stretches between entries.

The writing is done as a stream of consciousness and because of this it has helped me work through challenges, calm anxieties, see hidden pockets of gratitude and been a catalyst for “a-ha” moments. One crucial point is that these writings are private. Julia Cameron goes so far as to say if you need to burn the journal afterwards so be it. Having disposed of an entire journal of deep writing once before, I can tell you it’s a liberating experience to let that all go.

Earlier this week my frustration with how I felt and my unhealthy eating habits finally came to a tipping point. I have my morning pages to thank for finally taking a step this week to remove flour/gluten from my diet for the ten thousandth time. After a particularly glutenous weekend I felt awful and after putting down on paper just how awful I felt, I realized how silly I was being. Each time I remove flour/gluten from my diet I feel instantly better. This week was no exception. I went from ranting that I have no energy, my joints ache, my eyes blurred, my mind was foggy and I had a looming feeling of despair to waking up refreshed, energized throughout the day and feeling motivated and positive in a super short period of time. I think it’s one part intention to take care of me and one part actually doing it that has me feeling good again. I have to honor my body and listen to what it is clearly telling me to doesn’t want instead of allowing the instant gratification of a pastry or the ease of making a sandwich cloud my judgment.

Do you have a writing practice? I admit I’m inconsistent but, that aside it is a wonderful way to check in with yourself and see what kinds of feelings and thoughts are swirling around in your head. The idea to just write whatever pops up in the moment has really helped me to tap into those areas that I tend to close off and ignore. I encourage you to give it a try.

This life is yours to CREATE! I had the privilege of leading a painting experience to my largest group yet during a private painting party with My Sister’s Keeper AZ. 16 fabulous women and friends from the women’s empowerment group My Sisters Keeper AZ came together for an evening of painting, sisterhood and fun in their pjs!

My favorite part was meeting so many beautiful woman and witnessing them release their inner artist onto a canvas. Everyone was so open and willing to enjoy the process! They had a fun bonding experience while creating unique works of art. It never ceases to amaze me how different they all turn out when each person is presented with the same mix of tools and colors. This group of women came together and we had a night full of laughter, positive energy and each tapped into their individual creativity.

SistersKeeperCollageListen to what a couple attendees had to say!

I have always hoped I could create something this beautiful and thanks to Kristen I did! I had such an amazing experience at the Pajama & Painting Party put on by My Sisters Keeper AZ last Saturday night. I laughed, I cried, I created and I made at least 5 new friends. If I ever tell you about one of their events you must go! They are all about supporting women, holding space for them and having fun. Also, go check out Kristen Fagan Art & Design – she is an amazing artist with a big heart. I am forever changed! ~ Kerry Burki

Such an inspiring and fun painting party with one of the most fantastic and supportive group of women I have ever met! I had such a blast and felt at home instantly. Kristen, you were such a wonderful teacher and I love how you set up the class. iamLensKitchen, the food was so nourishing, just like the whole group of ladies and the time we spent together last night. Thank you! I’m so happy with what I created with the help of Kristen Fagan Art & Design … this one is going in my studio to remind me that I’m always exactly where I need to be … don’t worry be happy! ~Kimberly Kling of Joyful Roots

I could not have pulled this event off with the help of these lovely ladies! My sweet friend Meg helped with setup, keeping everyone’s water clean, replenishing paint, and so much more! I am so grateful for her generous and helpful spirit. Small bites menu of healthy goodness provided by Len’s Kitchen (@iamlenskitchen), we were lucky to have such good eats! Jennifer of Rowen Tree Photos graciously took a ton of pictures to capture the event. And lastly, I cannot thank the co-founders of My Sister’s Keeper AZ enough for their support and for putting their faith in me to lead this event for their members. In addition to the painting fun, the ladies of My Sisters Keeper AZ collected donations of clothes, bras, and toiletries for women who live in homeless shelters right here in our communities. These ladies have such big hearts!
