Perfectly Imperfect Birthday

This weekend, I celebrated my birthday with Bert and the boys. Last week was the first week of having both kids back to school. With the boys going to two different schools, a new work schedule for me, trying to make more home cooked dinner and packing lunches every evening I was wiped out by my birthday on Friday. I woke up a little cranky and blah, and the day went a bit awry. I kind of wished instead of working for the day, I would have planned a pedicure or lunch date for myself. Ah, well. I perked up after work and was pleasantly surprised when my birthday gift from Bert arrived early from Zappos. I wasn’t expecting it until next week. I opened the box with excitement to find men’s boots instead of my new pair of Birkenstocks. Luckily, Zappos is awesome. They apologized, got the right shoes in the mail and offered me a nice sized coupon to use on a future purchase – I already took advantage and ordered something I’ve wanted for awhile, a coffee grinder. By the way, when did Zappos begin carrying so much stuff?! After picking the kids up from school we stopped at Sprouts and I thought getting myself some flowers would be awesome. The boys picked out a beautiful white orchid plant. We headed home and when I walked in the door, I saw a huge purple and yellow orchid plant on the table. I was floored. Bert had the same idea! I couldn’t help but laugh. Now I have an beautiful purple orchid plant in the kitchen and the white one I bought myself in my studio. I wasn’t feeling up to going out to dinner so, we ordered pizza. It was delicious as always but unfortunately it left me super bloated and my stomach hurt for the rest of the night. Bert picked up a rich luscious dark chocolate and raspberry cake that looked delicious but, I couldn’t eat it that night. The kids didn’t like it at all so, not much was eaten Friday. I sure enjoyed it for breakfast on Saturday though! Bert is such a great sport. He tried so hard to give me a perfect day but, at every turn something went awry. It was however, a beautifully imperfect birthday.

Lucky for me, I got a whole weekend to celebrate! I felt like I needed to get my nature fix so, we decided to drive north and visit one of my favorite spots near Payson – the Tonto Natural Bridge. There is something so special about this little gem of a place. We had a wonderful time hanging in the cool mist of the waterfall in the cavern under the bridge. Afterwards we had an early dinner in at a local diner and headed home. We were listening to the Grateful Dead on the drive home and “So Many Roads” came on. I love road trips, driving and taking in the scenery that surrounds always eases my soul. It was such a wonderful day.

Today, I got a chance to thrift shop and buy supplies for an art project I’m working on and then I relaxed at home. A little resting, reading and cleaning getting ready for a new week. Thank you for all the wishes of happiness for my birthday via texts, calls and social media! You guys sure know how to make a girl feel loved!!! I’m blessed to have so many wonderful and caring people in my life. I am looking forward to year filled with happiness, abundance, creativity and more imperfectly perfect moments!

Nursery Artwork for Joseph Liam

Bert, the boys and I traveled to New York this month to visit our families and celebrate my sister Kelly’s baby shower. She decided on a white and gray color scheme for her baby boy, Joseph Liam’s nursery. A sweet little elephant bedding set from Pottery Barn was chosen and that was my starting point for creating the artwork for my nephew’s nursery.

Below are my pencil sketches and the first layers of paint through the final artwork.

I glued patterned scrapbook paper for the elephants ears and the balloons. The colors and outlines of the elephants were pretty heavy handed at first.

I knew I needed to go lighter so, I painted the elephants white and lightened the outlines as well as began lightening up the blue background. For Joseph Liam’s name banner I picked up wooden letters at the hobby store, glued them to the canvas and painted everything white. I have to thank Pinterest for this beauty of an idea. I pinned a similar letter piece a couple years ago and that was the perfect inspiration for this project! I first painted with acrylic paint but, after a few coats of white it wasn’t feeling bright white enough for me. I decided to try white spray paint instead. The paint covered the surface much quicker, easier and brighter with the spray paint.

Final three pieces of artwork. The colors and outlines are much softer overall. The little stitching detail on the ears and balloons adds the right amount of handmade sweetness to these little guys. I worked to match the Pottery Barn pattern as best I could with a little of me thrown in (mostly in the addition of a little color).

My sister opening her gift from me. It was one of the few surprises I was able to get by her as she was “in the know” about everything! The second shower picture is of me, my sisters Kelly and Katie and my Mom. Kelly definitely got my mother’s gift of creating beautiful spaces. She has done a fabulous job of turning the baby’s room into a beautiful nursery and I’m so happy to be able to create artwork for her little boy. I can’t wait to meet my nephew!

Work in Process: Desert Nectar

Desert Nectar
24″ x 36″

I worked on the background for this piece a few months ago.  Unsure of what to paint I let it sit in studio for awhile. I wanted to add to another desert plant painting to my collection so, when I thought about what to create, a picture I took of my neighbors plants popped in my head. The hummingbird appeared while I painted. I adore hummingbirds and always get excited when I see one so when he appeared in my artwork I was tickled! After a little research today, I found that this plant is called “Blue Elf Aloe” which doesn’t feel like a fitting name so, it’s all the more fitting to me that the hummingbird turned out to be blue.

Work in Process: Water Lilies

Water Lilies
12″ x 24″

The water lily, also known as lotus, is seen as a symbol for rebirth. Water lilies close and fall below the water at night and at daybreak rise from muck. While its roots are in the mud, the flower blooms beautifully above the water.

Make Art Monday: Light and Free

I have fallen a bit behind in my Make Art Monday practice. I had some family in town (woo hoo) and that threw me off my game for a little bit. I was back in the studio this past weekend and have some work to share for Make Art Monday!

Make Art Monday: Trust and Play

MAM

I enjoy having a creative challenge float around in the back of my mind to keep me motivated to create, connected to a community and push me to create something I may not on my own.  Currently, I’m being inspired by Make Art Monday hosted by Jo Kilma of Maps to Herself.  I am sharing my practice on my instagram feed @kristenfagan and my Facebook art page, Creative Stash each week. So far we have had the word, Trust and Play and this week’s word is Light. I enjoy how vague the words are and it’s really fun to see what other people create and how different the art can be! Use #makeartmonday on instagram, twitter or facebook to see what others are creating.

Phoenix Festival of the Arts Mural Project

I participated in a community outdoor painting “mural” last month during the Phoenix Festival of the Arts. Hugo Medina, a local muralist, posted a call to artists for live mural painting during the festival on his Facebook page and I jumped at the chance to be involved. Painting outside is awesome and something I do not get a chance to do often and painting in front of others has always intimidated me so, before I could think too much about it I signed up.  I have found the things that freak me out a bit but, feel right are best to say yes and think it through later.

Each artist was given a 3ftx6ft canvas and the theme “Downtown Phoenix” to inspire their work. I choose to create a desert landscape with vivid southwest colors and geometric art deco influences to celebrate art deco architecture seen around Downtown Phoenix. This piece took me about 10 hours over two days to complete. It was a wonderful experience to be outdoors painting alongside so many artists. I made some wonderful friends and was super inspired all weekend!

ArtDecoCollage

The festival featured live music and performers, art vendors, food trucks and over 100 artists participating in the mural project. It was amazing, we spent a few days painting our sections outdoors all around the festival with lots of people stopping to chat and enjoy the works in progress.

PhxFestivalCollage2

In addition to painting, I also worked the front gate on Sunday during the event and went to a canvas stretching workshop in November to assist in getting the 100 canvases made. The whole experience was really cool. It was my first community painting experience and I would like to allow myself the time and space to participate in similar events this year. There was something really restorative about the project.

The artwork created during the festival is for sale through the Phoenix Center of the Arts. A portion of the sales go to the center and a generous portions goes to the artist!
