Little Moon

Some of my favorite moments as a child involve looking up at my beloved night sky. Nighttime swimming at my uncle’s house as a kid was the best. I found so much peace and happiness floating along the water and looking up at the darkness. At my childhood home, sitting on top of our roof outside my sister’s bedroom window was my all time favorite spot to relax and dream.

When Bert and I moved into our own home in the desert, my sacred space was swinging in our hammock, you guessed it, under the night sky. I have always been a night owl and I’m sure my connection to the moon and stars is why I am that way.

While painting intuitively, you can imagine the joy I had when this sweet little moon face appeared! The stars showed up after and I love the whimsy nature of them. Oh Little Moon, you have my heart!

This beauty was sold quickly and went to the home of a wonderful soul in Phoenix.
She also has a love for the night sky so, I knew it was meant to be.

The Mountains Were Calling

ExploreWind Cave Trail

I love the rugged mountains of Arizona. It’s one of my favorite things about living here. I woke up last Sunday feeling the pull to get outside and reconnect with nature. It was a beautiful Spring day, a cool day that within a few months will be a distant memory. I needed to get out, the mountains were calling. I invited my family to join me but, I didn’t get any takers. So, I took the opportunity to treat myself and hike alone with my camera and sketchbook.

Tucson Gem and Mineral Show 2016

2016-02-07 17.01.19

February buzzed along with excitement in my corner of the beading world. I can’t believe it was a month ago that I was down in Tucson for the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show. I was at the To Bead True Blue show for two days working with Soft Flex Company.

This an international gem, mineral and fossil showcase and it’s mind-blowing how many vendors are crammed into every corner of Tucson. There isn’t just “one show” there are many shows of varying types in convention halls, hotels, motels and parking lots around the city.

I have lost count as to how many times I have been there however, this is the first year I branched out and purchased some stones and I LOVE them. Since I go to work in Soft Flex Company’s booth, you’ll find me at the beading/jewelry making oriented shows which have a limited range of minerals and stones. I did manage to find a really pretty tanzanite aura quartz, a smooth rose quartz and a small geode slice that I plan to make into a pendant, all shown in the picture above.

Of course, I can’t leave the Soft Flex booth without picking up some much needed jewelry making items. I grabbed a new bead board as mine has seen better days, 4 spools of medium .019 diameter colored Soft Flex beading wire, 2mm silver filled Soft Flex crimp tubes, double density round kumihimo disk and two tubes of superduo beads.

Speaking of superduo beads, I used these little two hole beads for a new jewelry tutorial design that was picked up by a national beading magazine! I’m in the process of writing out the instructions and working on a second color option. I’ll share more about that when the magazine is due to come out!

Art Is Not What You Make, It’s Who You Are

lotusLotus rising from the mud – created during Whitney Freya’s painting meditation.

This week I was rejected. Well, that’s not entirely true but, my artwork was and that’s pretty much the same thing. It wasn’t a flat out “we don’t want you” kind of rejection but, let’s face it, it doesn’t sting any less. A no is a no. It happens to us all at one time or another but, it’s still painful. I was disappointed, hurt, maybe a little angry. Rejection. It’s what we all fear. It’s what stops us in our tracks when we contemplate putting ourselves out there. So, what did I do?

I reached out to my husband and one of my besties to share in my sadness – misery loves company, right? I cried and moped around for the larger part of the day. I may have had a few handfuls of chocolate chips. I allowed myself to feel the pain. After a little bit, I pulled myself together and submitted my work to another show as well as jotted down some ideas for a themed show I’d also like to submit too. I got right back on the horse so to speak. I listened to Flying Leap! Lori Portka and Liv Lane’s free audio class about fear and finding your purpose. I purchased their book Infinite Purpose directly after. Divine timing.

Once the kids were in bed for the night I decided the best thing to do was give myself some space and paint. I have been listening to a painting meditation series with Whitney Freya on and off since January and that felt like the perfect medicine and you know what, it totally was. I listened to the meditative music, moved watercolors around on paper and I felt lighter, more connected to my soul and began to shed the sadness from earlier in the day.

Art heals. It’s why I create. At the very core of what pulls me in is the desire to feel that direct access to my heart through my intuitive mind, eyes and hands. Art is not what you make, it’s who you are. It’s who I am.

I let my feelings simmer for a couple days after my rejection and then replied. I was grateful they took the time to look over my work. I also wanted to ask a question. The response mentioned that my style was similar to other artists already scheduled and that stuck with me. You don’t want to hear that your work looks like everyone else’s and it’s tough to look at your own work with a critical eye. I wanted to know more. What was it that made my work feel similar to others? I wanted to be able to see my work through a different lens. I may or may not change my work based on the opinion but, I wanted the opportunity to sit with it and let it simmer. I have not heard back yet but, hope that I do.

Soul purpose sometimes doesn’t make sense. It isn’t romantic and doesn’t necessarily work the way you think it should. Soul purpose is about growth. It is about you showing up bigger than you ever have before. It is about you stretching in sometimes uncomfortable ways. ~ Amber Kuileimailani Bonnici

I know I need to show up more and do my souls work. I am leaning into the idea of daily practice and what that may look like. The desire to be authentically me is overwhelming and paralyzing at times. I look at this as a lesson of growth. My voice is a result of dedicated practice and that is something I need to make time for.

Rejection. It is a catalyst. It is something that pushes us, makes us uncomfortable and can break us if we let it. Don’t let it. Move through the hurt and find your strength. You are not the sum of what people think. You are so much more. Believe in your worth. Believe in your gifts. Believe in YOU.

Visions of Spring I and II

IMG_1680

I created Vision of Spring in 2013, it was a fun process to create this large abstract color painting. I love the colors and it has been consistently one of my top art pillow cover sellers however, this piece has yet to find it’s home. I think that’s been a good lesson about what is pleasing in one format may not work in a different one. I decided to keep the original design available for prints and printed products and add some embellishments to the large painting to play with it a bit more and see where it leads.

IMGP7646-copyrightVisions of Spring I (original), 30″x 48″, 2013

I added more gray, some sprigs of flowers and pod shapes for an delicate look. I loved the softer colors in the original and wanted to play up that feeling.  I am really enjoying the vibe of the makeover artwork yet, I still love the original work. What do you think? Do you prefer the color wash before I embellished it or after? I found this to be a neat painting experiment and practice in letting go and moving forward when something isn’t working as it is.

Abstract Mandalas I and II

One of my favorite things to paint is mandalas. The repetition of shapes and patterns is freeing and calming to create. You simply start with a center and add on one row at a time. As mandalas change and evolve they help you to see how one thing leads to the next. They are a good tool for trusting and working through your intuition. I fall into a blissful meditative state whenever I draw or paint one. Today I want to share with you two different but, similar styled abstract mandala paintings I have created. You’ll also find a link to watch a work in progress painting video. Super vulnerable moment as I’m not very confident on camera but, you have to start somewhere. xo

Believe in You Affirmation Artwork

I enjoy making art that speaks. In this case it is a positive affirmation and reminder to believe in yourself. An affirmation is a personal statement that can be used to boost self-esteem, reduce stress, and manifest the life of your dreams by retraining your subconscious mind. The playful colors and mandala design along with the affirmation in this artwork will infuse your space with positive vibes and gently remind you that you are worth believing in.

When Life Gives You Lemons

2016-01-10 17.16.59

You make lemonade and lemon bars and lemon spaghetti and … well, you get the idea. Every winter our little lemon tree gives us a beautiful bounty. Here are of my favorite ways and some new things I tried this season.

2015-11-08 09.43.49-1Warm Water with Lemon and Cayenne

I enjoy this drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The warm water and lemon helps flush and re-hydrate the body, improve digestion, offer a little immune boost with vitamin C and potassium and can lead to cleaner skin. Remember not to squeeze your lemon directly into boiling water, you will destroy the live enzymes in the lemon, instead use warm water. Combining cayenne with lemon increases the detoxing effect and raises the temperature of your body increasing your metabolism. To really boost your immune fighting ability add a splash of raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar. ACV is known to help to relieve allergies, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, aid digestion, control candida and more. A quick search online will reveal so many ways ACV this helps! I drink this concoction with a straw to minimize the amount that gets on my teeth and could erode enamel.

2016-01-24 14.49.34Fresh Lemonade
Recipe from Inga Garten

This recipe has you put the lemon juice, water, sugar and ice into a blender. I had never done that before with lemonade and it’s brilliant. It’s frothy, light and delicious.

img_3874Oatmeal Lemon Creme Bars
Recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction

These have become my family’s favorite lemon dessert. The cream filling tastes like lemon cheesecake. I usually use the Better Crocker cookie mix shortcut which makes this such a simple and quick recipe but, I think I’ll try the from scratch recipe next time. Since we are all sensitive to dairy and I make these quite a bit around the holidays, I split the filling in half and made two batch last time and they tasted great.

DSCF1278Fresh Lemon Bars
Recipe from 365 Favorite Brand Name Cookie Recipes

Crust:

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened (although I usually add another 1/4 cup)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • grated peel of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 and 1/4 cup flour

Lemon Layer:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 and 2/3 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • grated peel of 1/2 lemon
  • juice of 2 lemons (6 tablespoons)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • confectioner’s sugar

To make crust, in a bowl blend butter, sugar and lemon peel. Gradually stir in flour to form a soft crumbly dough. Press evenly into the bottom of an aluminum foil lined 13x9x2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, to prepare lemon layer. In a large bowl whisk eggs well. Stir together sugar, flour and baking powder. Gradually whisk sugar mixture into eggs. Stir in lemon peel, lemon juice and vanilla. Pour over hot baked crust. Return to oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Cool. Using foil on two sides, lift out the cookie base. With a wet knife cut into bars or squares. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar.

0228091735Lemon Spaghetti

  • 2/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest

In a large bowl, whisk oil, Parmesan cheese, lemon juice, salt and pepper to blend. Set the lemon sauce aside. (Sauce can be made up to 8 hours ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature before using).

Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid. Add spaghetti to the lemon sauce; toss with basil and lemon zest. Toss pasta with enough reserved cooking liquid, 1/4 cup at a time, to moisten. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

2016-01-11 18.38.20Ways to Use Lemon Peels and Save Lemons for Later

  • Put down the garbage disposal to freshen it up
  • Place in a jar with vinegar and soak for two weeks, add vinegar to spray bottle for a natural cleaner
  • Freeze lemon juice in ice cubes
  • Freeze lemon zest
  • Freeze a whole lemon, zest the entire thing and put it on anything. Say what? Yep. I had read this a few times recently and the health benefits it touts is worth giving it a try.  Simply take an organic lemon, wash it and then put it in the freezer. Once it is frozen you get whatever is necessary to grate or shred the whole lemon without even peeling it first…. I’m always looking for new ways to enjoy this delicious citrus fruit. I would love to hear what your favorite lemon recipe or way to use lemons is!

Happy New Year!

NewYear

Happy New Year Friends!!! Thank you for an amazing 2015. I haven’t had a chance to process it all yet. I will be working in Leonie Dawson’s Shining Workbook this month and once I release my 2015 it will really come into focus what transpired. I know it was a big, transformative year. I know this because I have been in hibernation resting from it all. I have slept for 12 hrs on at least three different occasions within the last two weeks. I have taken the kids school “winter break” quite literally, ha! In addition to all the sleep, I have been binge watching movies with the family and reading so, even when I’m awake there has been a lot of down time relaxing. It has been healing.

Of course, I felt the “should’s” creep up. I should be getting things done; do my workbooks, clean the garage, take the kids to see snow, work on a new jewelry idea, get my artwork updated online, get outside and the list goes on. All those “should’s” are compelling and worth making time for but, I had to shoo those thoughts away and remind myself that rest was work too. A different kind of work … soul work. There is no shame in giving in to your need for rest and recuperation. When the need within being is strong, it’s important to listen. The creative muse often shows up demanding attention, energy and time in anyway possible followed by a quiet stillness. It’s okay to enjoy both, the yin and the yang.

Fittingly, I was treated to an online yin yoga session this week. It was an offering in the Woman Unleashed online retreat. And today, I had the pleasure of exploring painting with intuition (my fav) with Alena Hennessy. We created “I am …” artwork.

2016-01-01 20.07.04

I am devoted. I love that. I have never had that word show up for me before. After I was done, I thought about my devotion and how it applies to my life. I am devoted … to my creative life, my art, my loves and my tribe (that includes you!) Wishing you a new year filled with love and devotion. xoxo
